The Precipice of Greatness. Will Lionel Fall In?

33 iconNot sure if you’re aware, but Memphis coach Lionel Hollins is on the precipice of joining some exclusive company in the NBA community. This weekend, Lionel goes for the 33rd win… of his career.

If he pulls it off this Saturday against Minnesota, it’s going to be one big ‘ol party. In fact, I believe the Grizzlies promotion department is planning on having a ceremony to celebrate this accomplishment by bringing out other coaches who have also won 33 games in their career.

Guests include:

Frank Hamblen, 33-71 (Bucks 91-92, Lakers 04-05)

Neil Cohalan, 33-27 (Knicks 1947, technically coached in the BAA – but we’ll give it to him. Actually, he sounds like an interesting guy. Look him up.)

And special guests (a two-fer!!)…

Marc Iavaroni, 33-90 (Grizzlies, 07-09ish) & Kevin O’Neill, 33-49 (Toronto, 04-05 )

Sounds like it’s going to be a rip-roaring good time…

And for those of you keeping score at home, Lionel only needs a few more wins to catch the greats like…

Dick Vitale, 34-60 (Detroit, 79-81ish) / Tom Marshall, 35-94 (Cincinnati, 58-60) / Brian Winters – remember him?, 36-148 (Vancouver & Golden State) / Michael Curry (who is now in his second year), 39-43 for Detroit

And, with luck, by Easter Lionel may be able to catch the coaching legend Reggie Theus, who recently went 44-62 with the Sacramento Kings. That was before he was fired when the team was 6-18 last year.

Wait, that’s 24 games into a season. And the Grizz have already played 9, and we’re 1-8.

Yikes. Probably need to win a few games, Lionel.
