The Non-Conference Schedule

The University of Memphis released its Non-Conference schedule for the 2010 – 2011 Men’s Basketball season this morning and its . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . un-impressive (to say the least). Surely Tigers fans that only care to celebrate win after win will be happy, but for those that understand R.P.I ratings and the type of preparation teams who expect to be in the NCAA tournament should go through prior to March, this won’t cut it.

Full of sub par competition with teams that are not in the same class of Memphis’ Mens Basketball program, this should easily equal out to be a successful regular season, record wise, for the Tigers. But what will it mean during March Madness? Very possibly an early exit for Josh Pastner and Co. who will likely keep at least 4 True Freshman in their regular rotation. During the Calipari Era, Memphis always made a point to play one of the tougher Non-Conference schedules in the country to make up for bad Conference U.S.A match ups. It seemed to work, landing them a top 3 seeding in each of the NCAA Tournaments between 2006 and 2009. Besides appealing to the NCAA Selection Committee the previous Non-Conference schedules gave fans something to desire as it included home games with nationally respected basketball programs like UCLA, Duke, Texas, Georgetown, Tennessee, Gonzaga, and Arizona. This years line up includes only three of these teams mentioned above and only one of them at home, Georgetown. According to reports, the Memphis’ Staff has been less then open to discussing criticism of this scheduling.

Notable games on the schedule include home match ups with Miami (FL) on November 15, Western Kentucky on December 4, and Georgetown on December 23. Others games of interest include a re-match of the National Championship game of 2008 against Kansas in New York, LSU, Gonzaga, and the annual bout with in state rival Tennessee on January 5, 2011.
