King Vitaman

Chris Vernon and listeners spent a good portion of time reminiscing on an old school cereal by the name of “King Vitaman” on today’s show. For those of us left out of the loop, like myself, I thought it might help to provide some visuals and a brief description. According to the good folks over at Wikipedia King Vitaman” was and is a brand of pre-sweetened breakfast cereal produced by Quaker Oats and sold in the United States. The cereal entered the marketplace in 1970, and although it has changed mascots over the years, it is still in production.
King Vitaman Cereal boasts high vitamin and iron content, in addition to a more modest amount of sugar (only 6 grams – more popular breakfast cereals, such as Cap’n Crunch and Lucky Charms contain 13 grams or more). The televised commercials for the cereal were animated by Jay Ward Productions, the creators of Rocky and Bullwinkle. The advertising featured King Vitaman and his knights: Sir Laffitup & Sir Cravenleigh and their foes Blue Baron & Not-So-Bright Knight. The accompanying jingle invited children to “Have Breakfast with the King.”
Unlike most well-known cereal mascots, the depiction of King Vitaman has changed somewhat over the years. A photographed man once held the role, as have at least two noticeably different cartoon illustrations.
