I think its safe to file this under “Never Would Have Happened If John Calipari Was Here”. On Tuesday afternoon University of Memphis Head Basketball Coach Josh Pastner extended a full athletic scholarship offer to second year guard Drew Barham. Barham, who averaged just 4.8 minutes per game last season as a walk on for the Tigers, has put in much work during the off-season. Improving his already above average shooting, improving his defense, but most importantly adding weight to his 173 lbs frame that will better prepare him for play during the NCAA College Basketball Season.

During a 10 day period of practice prior to leaving for the exhibition games in the Bahamas and during the 2 games on the island Barham impressed the Tigers coaching staff. In both games Barham combined for 13 3 Pointers on 19 Attempts and averaged 23 PPG.

Before the departure of the Tigers previous head coach John Calipari, Barham had not been recruited by the school during his prep playing career at Christian Brother High School. Following Calipari’s departure for Kentucky, new head coach Pastner made a serious push towards a couple local players including Barham to stay home and play for the short-handed team. Barham accepted, requested a release from a previous commitment to Southern Illinois University, and joined the Tigers as a walk on for the 2009 – 2010 season. Pastner said Tuesday “We’re not giving him one. He’s earned it” speaking in regards to the scholarship offer to Drew Barham.
