On This Day In Sports: The National Football League Players Begin A 57 Day Strike

 On this day in sports: September 20, 1982 the National Football League begins a 57 day strike which ended on November 17th. Due to the strike, the regular season was reduced from 16 to 9 games and the NFL adopted a 16 team playoff system. 8 teams from each conference were seeded 1 – 8 and matched up against each other without relevance of their division standings. The #1 seed from the NFC, the Washington Redskins finished the season as Super Bowl XVII Champions defeating the Miami Dolphins 27 to 17.
