Home Body: Melrose High School 5 Star Basketball Star Adonis Thomas Chooses Memphis

For the 2nd year in a row, University of Memphis Head Basketball Coach Josh Pastner pulls off a feat that often eluded his predecessor John Calipari, by convincing Tennessee’s Top High School Basketball Recruit to stay and play his college career in Memphis. Last year it was #18th ranked Joe Jackson who starred at White Station High School before joining the Tigers this past summer. This year Pastner wooed Melrose High School 5 Star Forward Adonis Thomas, the #15 ranked recruit in the nation, with the skills and gift of gab that has seen him rise up the college coaching ranks over the last couple years.

To gain the committment from Thomas, Pastner and staff with the help of University of Memphis fans and other notable alumni like Penny Hardaway, made a huge pitch that would have been hard for anyone to turn down during “Memphis Madness” (Click Here To See The Video Which Aired During Memphis Madness). When Thomas was asked by ESPN’s Paul Biancardi if the video helped him make a decision, Thomas responded “It did impact my decision,” “It was a privilege to listen to Penny Hardaway talk about what the city of Memphis and the University of Memphis meant to him.”

Thomas chose the University of Memphis over Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas and UCLA. Since Thomas has a 4.0 (G.P.A)and might very well end up the Valedictorian at Melrose High School eligibility should not be an issue for the 6’6″ Small Forward/ Power Forward. If all goes according to plan Thomas will more than likely join the Tigers during the summer of 2011 and replace some of the talent they are expected to lose to the NBA Draft following this upcoming season.

If you can’t quite wait to see Mr. Thomas play in a Tigers uniform, catch him during his senior year at Melrose (Click Here For Link To Melrose High School Full 2010 – 2011 Mens Basketball Schedule)

Earlier today Jason Smith, the Commercial Appeal Memphis Tiger’s Beat Writer, stopped by The Chris Vernon Show following Thomas’ announcement to talk about what this meant for the Memphis Tigers Basketball Program and what other big recruits the Tigers might be landing soon (Click Here To Hear Audio of Hour 2 of The Chris Vernon Show Thursday October 28, 2010).
