Tennessee Titans Name Mike Munchak As New Head Coach

The Tennessee Titans/ Houston Oilers will have their first new face at the helm in 17 years. Following the mutual split with the longest tenured coach in the NFL, Jeff Fisher, the Titans announced earlier today that their current Offensive Line Coach, Mike Munchak, would receive the promotion and take over for the franchise he once played for. Munchak, who has never been a head coach on any level, was a Hall of Fame caliber player for 12 NFL Seasons and is one of very few Tennessee Titans/ Houston Oilers to have his jersey number retired.

Munchak was one of five candidates to be interviewed for the open position and was thought to be the front runner from the beginning. When Titans owner Bud Adams was asked about the hire, he shared the following thoughts.

“Mike has been successful at everything he has been associated with at our franchise and I have no reason to believe that he won’t be successful as our head coach,” Adams said in a statement. “He earned Hall of Fame distinction as a player and yearly he has been one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL. He understands where we have been and knows where we need to go.”

Getting out of the shadow of Jeff Fisher will be tough but with the decline of the Indianapolis Colts and other AFC South foes buckling under the pressure to step up and take over, making the playoffs or barely missing them will likely equal a win for Munchak and the franchise in the eyes of the fans.
