Its officially, official now. The University of Memphis Men’s Basketball program got their prized recruit, Adonis Thomas, yesterday morning when he signed his Letter of Intent to play for Coach Josh Pastner and the Tigers next year. Thomas, who is the Number 1 ranked high school basketball player in the Class of 2011 according to www.sportingnews.com, gave his verbal committment to the Tigers on October 28th, choosing to stay home in Memphis over taking his talents to South Beach, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, or UCLA. Thomas’ signing with the hometown team marks a significant achievement for Coach Pastner as he is now 2 for 2 when attempting to land the City of Memphis’ top basketball prospects. This year it was Thomas, last year he convinced Joe Jackson, Tarik Black, and sharp shooter Chris Crawford to stay home and help him sure up a young Memphis squad.

Following yesterday’s official signing of Thomas, Coach Pastner made a visit to The Chris Vernon Show to share his jubilance with our listeners and talk about other news and notes surrounding the team as they prepare to open the 2010 – 2011 Season Friday November 12 against Centenary. Play Time Is Over (Sort Of): Tigers Kick Off 2010 Exhibition Season Against LeMoyne Owen Tonight

University of Memphis vs: LeMoyne Owen College

Game Time: 7:00PM

Where: FedEx Forum

Coverage: WREC 600AM and Live Stream On www.GoTigersGo.com (Must Be Registered User To See The Game)

Time to put those reverseable practice jerseys away, for the night at least, and debut the new Memphis Tigers to the City of Memphis for the first time aginst competition other then themselves. On second thought the word competition might be a bit generous but never-the-less its another team, who wears another color jersey, and it doesn’t say University of Memphis on it.

Tonight under the lights of the FedEx Forum the #19th ranked University of Memphis Mens Basketball team will open up exhibition/ pre-season play against LeMoyne Owen College, a local NCAA Division II school who doesn’t have a rich tradition in basketball success, but always puts up a worthy fight when playing the Tigers. Last year the Magicians had a 30 – 29 advantage before the Tigers went on a 16 – 3 run to close out the 1st half of play. The less talented LeMoyne Owen could do nothing more and seemed to run out of gas shortly after the 2nd half began as the Tigers rolled to a 98 – 68 victory. Tonight, as Coach Pastner enters his 2nd year as head coach of the Tigers, he will have a great opportunity to see where his young squad is on both ends of the ball after a little over 2 weeks of practice where the main focus has been defense and rebounding. Pastner announced yesterday that he will start only 1 of his highly touted Freshman, being Antonio Barton, along with Juniors Charles Carmouche, Wesley Witherspoon, Angel Garcia and Senior Will Coleman. Of his #2 ranked recruiting class (according to www.Rivals.com)  only 6 of the 8 Freshman on the 2010 – 2011 team will suit up tonight, with Will Barton being evaluated daily for a knee injury suffered on October 22 and Jelan Kendrick experiencing an indefinite absence from the team for personal reasons.

The media has already weighed in on the 2010 – 2011 version of the Memphis Tigers placing them as the Pre-Season #19th ranked program in the nation, where do you all realistically think the Tigers are AT THIS MOMENT? (Vote Below)

Just In Case You Missed Chris Vernon’s Interview With Josh Luchs (click here for link to podcast)

Not often do sports stories that will shake up all phases of the sports business see the light of day. In my lifetime alone I can probably count the ones that I remember on my right hand. Reggie Bush is ruled ineligible by the NCAA, MLB players testify on Capital Hill, Mike Vick is sent to Federal Prison, and “The Brawl At The Palace In Detroit” are the ones that come to mind. Sports Illustrated’s newest cover story, which will be released in their October 18th issue, has the potential to trump all of the above and possibly anything you can think of as well.

The Subject Of Sports Illustrated's October 18, 2010 Cover Story "Confessions Of An Agent" Josh Luchs Will Visit The Chris Vernon Show Today, October 12, At 4:25PM. Listen In Live On 730AM (Memphis) or Online

Former NFL agent Josh Luchs sits down with SI writer George Dohrmamn and spills the beans, literally. Sharing in-depth accounts of his 20+ years as an agent, which includes tales of how he got into the business, experiences he had over his career, and even his own admission to wrong doing according to NCAA/ NFLPA rules and guidelines in regards to providing extra benefits to student athletes (paying college players).

Well before Mr. Luchs’ story is released in print (it can be viewed online now – click here) he has decided to visit The Chris Vernon Show and talked about his story, his experience, reactions he is receiving from the interview, and what he hopes comes from his ‘tell all”. Luchs will visit the show at 4:25PM (CST – Memphis) and can be heard on our station 730 Fox Sports (730AM – Memphis) or Online (click here for link).

The NCAA . . . . . . Every Schools Worst Enemy

Since laying the slap down on the University of Memphis Men’s Basketball Program at the end of last summer for the use an ineligible players during the 2007 – 2008 season the NCAA Infractions Committee has been on somewhat of a roll, putting the kibosh on a few of the largest and most storied collegiate athletic programs in the nation. Bobby Bowden Visits The Dan Patrick Show

Ex-Florida State Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden has been making his rounds publicizing his new book with Mark Schlabach “Called To Coach“. Normally a book tour regardless to who wrote it is rarely news or noteworthy but Coach Bowden is somewhat letting the skeletons out of the closet on this one. Besides sharing great stories of interactions with other great coaches, his recruitment of prize prep players, and reminiscing on old times. Bowden has been causing quite a stir with his personal recollection of how things ended at Florida State. According to Coach Bowden during his interview with the Dan Patrick Show Friday August 27 “If I had my choice, I would have stayed one more year,” Bowden said. “I felt like I had it in me. I told them.” “I didn’t want to stop coaching but the school forced me out. They had other plans,” Bowden stated “it was the president and the board of trustees specifically that asked me to leave, even though I don’t think all of them wanted that to happen.”

It’s hard to imagine Florida State forcing out the one guy who built the program to national prominence, but according to Bowden it happened. Since he has started talking to the media and the release of the book, FSU officials have been making comments through the media hoping to soften the blow from the bad PR. Audio of Coach Bowden’s interview can be heard below

Memphis Tigers Guard Drew Barham Gets Rewarded For Hard Work

Drew Barham Photo Courtesy Of David C. Minkin/ In Focus Sports Photography

I think its safe to file this under “Never Would Have Happened If John Calipari Was Here”. On Tuesday afternoon University of Memphis Head Basketball Coach Josh Pastner extended a full athletic scholarship offer to second year guard Drew Barham. Barham, who averaged just 4.8 minutes per game last season as a walk on for the Tigers, has put in much work during the off-season. Improving his already above average shooting, improving his defense, but most importantly adding weight to his 173 lbs frame that will better prepare him for play during the NCAA College Basketball Season.
